Question #4 List the functions for each of the six types of glial cells. 1.) Astrocytes have a variety of functions, including: a.) The astrocytes create a Blood-Brain Barrier that isolates the CNS from the general circulation. b.) The microfilaments that are packed within the astrocytes extend across the breadth of the cell and its processes. Because of this extensive cytoskeleton the astrocytes are provided with reinforcement. This is handy in creating a Three-Dimensional Framework for the CNS. c.) Astrocytes moving into the site of damaged neural tissue can make repairs to structures which stabilize the tissue, preventing from further damage. Therefore, Repairing Damaged Neural Tissue. d.) Astrocytes appear to be involved in Guiding Neural Development by directing both the growth and interconnection of developing neurons in the embryonic brain. e.) Astrocytes help in Controlling the Interstitial Environment by adjusting the composition of the interstitial fluid. 2.)
