Child Abuse Interaction or lack of interaction between a child and caregiver that results in non-accidental harm to the child to the child’s physical or psychological well-being Types: Neglect Emotional/Psychological Abuse Physical (battering) Abuse Sexual Abuse Neglect (Most common) Deprivation of basic needs o Food, shelter, attention, safety, healthcare, clean environment Effects of Neglect Malnutrition o Retarded growth o Brain development o Poor motor skill development o More illness Poor language/communication skills Inability to conceptualize (to form ideas) o Lower IQ o Poor school achievement o Behavioral problems Lack of internalization of morals Offenders (of neglect) Lack of knowledge Poor judgment Infantile personality
