BA 342 EXAM STUDY GUIDE-RON JOHNSON CHAPTER 1 A SPECIAL INTEREST IN SOCIETY: PLURALISTIC SOCIETY Pluralism is the diffusion of power among society’s many groups and organizations. “A pluralistic society is one in which there is wide decentralization and diversity of power concentration .” Remember- Plural-many (i.e. power is dispersed among many groups and organizations) *MONISM-SOCIAL ORGANIZATION INTO ONE INSTITUTION *ANARCHY-SOCIAL ORGANIZATION INTO AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PERSONS Note: A pluralistic system does not appear to be very efficient but its merits are considerable. It has worked in the past to achieve some form of equilibrium in concentration of power. BUSINESS CRITICISM AND CORPORATE RESPONSE: In a pluralistic society, organizations (such as business and society) are prone to scrutiny and criticism. This has shaped the evolution of business and society relationships today. Various factors have created a climate in which criticism of business has taken place and flourished. Some of them are: a) AFFLUENCE AND EDUCATION: (Affluence: level of wealth, disposable income and standard of living) As the society becomes more prosperous and better educated, higher expectations of its major institutions such as business naturally follow. b) AWARENESS THROUGH TELEVISION, MOVIES AND THE INTERNET: The media plays a major role in spreading awareness amongst people. Television is the most pervasive and powerful medium in society.

1) 24/7 News and Investigative News Programs (such as 60 minutes, 20/20, Dateline)- Corporate executives today consider media criticism is one of the biggest threats to their corporate reputations. They not only have to deal with news channels but also popular and influential investigative news programs that analyze the information and focus on their dark side. 2) PRIME-TIME TLEVISION PROGRAMS- Businessmen have been portrayed as the “smirking, scheming, cheating and conniving bad guys” on TV shows for years. They have been shown to commit many serious felonies. They are the evil and greedy people of the society. 3) COMMERCIALS- This might be due to company’s own fault. If companies do not portray their products fairly and honestly, they are undermining their own credibility. Commercials can either help the company improve its sales or damage the
