Kathryn Putney POS-2041-21753-201120 Issue Analysis April 11, 2011 PART I: POSITION(S) OF POLITICAL PARTIES: 1) President Barack Obama, in a major legal and political move, has determined that the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, that bars federal recognition of same sex marriages, is unconstitutional, and has ordered the Justice Department to stop defending the law in court, according to information provided by the administration. While Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine has said he would sign a gay marriage bill into law, Republican Chris Christie, who unseated Corzine on Tuesday, has said he would veto it as governor. Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, a Camden Democrat who supports gay marriage, said yesterday he would only bring the issue up for debate if there appeared to be enough votes to pass it. 2) President Bush until recently had insisted that an amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibiting gay marriage was an unnecessary and bad idea.
