Consentir (e>ie ) (to consent) is a good example of a basic verb that you know (  sentir ) and a prefix (  con- ).  Notice that the verb  preferir  has two  e 's in the stem. Whenever there are two  e 's in the stem of a  verb, it is the second one that undergoes a stem change. The conjugated forms of  preferir  are  somewhat difficult to picture, so take a good look at Table 5
