The past seven years have provided Americans with plenty of videos and pictures of conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many people have actually become immune to the daily cyclical violence in those regions. Of the many images that make their way to our television sets, newspapers and magazines from those conflicts, most have American troops draped from head to toe in military gear, and often surrounded by other military equipment and vehicles. While most people watching those images might not bother with about something as mundane as logistics, the rest of us might ask: Where does all that equipment and vehicles come from, how does it get there, and who does all the heavy lifting? This paper attempts to answer those and other associated questions, along with analyzing the operation of logistics in a combat environment (in this case, Iraq) of a company (160-180 personal) sized unit. In order to achieve the above, we must look and analyze a real life unit that has completed a tour of duty in Iraq. Being part of the 2 nd Battalion 4 th Marines, Fox Company, for more than three years (2004-2007) and completing two tours of Iraq, choosing my unit for the purposes of this paper was a natural fit. The paper shall look at Fox Company’s (An infantry unit) time in Iraq from February-September 2004. The focus will be on how the troops and equipment moved into the combat theatre, how equipment was deployed in the fight when it was needed, how broken equipment was dealt with, the role and duties of logistical personal in the company, and the redeployment of equipment back to America. All these issues will be dealt with while keeping a logistical point of view and during the course of the paper we also analyze what the problems were and how various tasks might have been done better, and what are the main take away points. It is important to note that the paper relies heavily on personal memory, interviews with other Marines deployed with the unit, and where applicable, military publications have also been used. The Fox Company Logistics chain of command for their 2004 Iraq tour looked like this: This paper is divided into three phases as well: A) Phase 1: Looks at Fox Company egress from the US and how equipment was handled and transported to Iraq. B) Phase 2: Looks at logistical issues Fox faced while stationed in Iraq. In particular this paper will discuss the movement, evacuation, and hospitalization of personnel, and delivering supplies to the front line. C) Phase 3: Deals with Fox coming back to the US and concluding thoughts. Phase 1: When asked what military logistics are, Corporal Spaulding replied, “Military logistics is the art and science of planning and carrying out the movement and maintenance of military forces.” The movement and planning begins long before a unit actually deploys.
