Yogini Patel Anthro Discussion The classic period of Maya used rituals and ceremonies performed by the societies elites or rulers to appease the gods, repeat historical events and prepare for the future. But not all the ceremonies were secret rituals, in fact many were public rituals, theatrical performances and dances played in a public arenas to unite communities and express political power relationships. For example the myth of the two twins, the heaven and hell (sun and underworld) demonstrated, It demonstrated how extraordinary humans could enter Xibalba, outwit the gods of death, and return, and thus was a metaphor for the greatest life force in the cosmos, the sun which emerges from Xibalba every morning The myth also demonstrated that rebirth is possible only through sacrifice (the twins were reborn after sacrifice by both fire and decapitation), and thus was a metaphor for life after death. Every year, the first weekend of February is spent in front of television with millions of viewers glued to their television screen to watch the biggest football game of the season. Usually many people will watch it for the game but many other people watch it for the commercial. It is a ritual because it brings the whole nation together for a healthy dose of competition in a sporting event. Another example that the world celebrates is on 9/11 they observe moments of silence and wear small flags on the lapels of their suits in honor of those who died. The acts of patriotism are small rituals. Whether it is the super bowl or 9/11 people display their pride for their teams and their country. Which are all small rituals....
