Yogini Patel Articles: Union Bill Is Law, but Debate Is Far From Over See Wisconsin Loss as Galvanizing [Both articles from New York Times ] While on the train ride home from Amherst, I was online reading about the catastrophe to hit Japan did these articles catch my eye. Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Republican, recently signed into law a bill that limits bargaining rights for most government workers, concluding a ruthless legislative battle. Democrats and union leaders are encouraged by the large amount of people protesting and rallying at the Capital to oppose the “politically motivated efforts to weaken unions”. In the recent midterm elections the democrats became the minority in both houses. The new law weakens unions representing public sector employees by limiting bargaining to wages, restricting raises to inflation, increasing the amount employees pay for health insurance and pension and giving union member the right not to pay dues.
