An explosion occurs when kinetic or chemical energy is turned into heat. Hot objects have enormous energy that is very random; hot atoms and molecules are moving back and forth very quickly, all in different directions. When the temperature of an object increases, it expands because its molecules begin to move even more quickly and push each other out of the way. When solids become gases, their volume automatically increases by a factor of 1000, and the increased temperature makes this factor even greater. So when an explosion happens, chemical or kinetic energy is suddenly all converted into heat, which causes solid objects to suddenly become very hot gases, which expand incredibly rapidly because their atoms and molecules are moving very rapidly all in different directions and push everything around them out of the way, including bricks, metal, rocks, or any other type of material.
