Primary and Secondary Emotions Layers of emotions Secondary emotions as masks. Experiencing each emotion can lead toward the initial feeling, and then toward healing Greenberg, 2002 – anger, sadness, fear, shame, pain, hurt - seem to be most important involved in change.

Reflection of feeling Reflection of Feeling - helper statement that explicitly labels clients’ feelings. Used to identify, clarify, experience, intensify feelings. You sound angry. I wonder if you feel betrayed?

Benefits of reflection of feelings Can be difficult to identify/accept feelings Why? Modeling expression of feelings Letting clients know helper isn’t afraid of feelings Letting clients know they are acceptable regardless of their feelings. Acknowledging importance of feelings, but also taking some of the power away.
