ENGR-STEPS 111; Project 1: Tensile Loader; Fall 2005 1/5 ENGR-STEPS 111 Project 1: Supermag™ Tensile Testing Apparatus Objective: The objective is to construct an apparatus that is capable of loading a Supermag™ stick that has two balls attached to it to failure. Purpose: Data collected from the apparatus will allow for the determination of the load required to cause the ball to separate from the stick. Need: A means to load a Supermag™ stick that has two balls attached to failure and to quantify the load for failure. Solution: A testing apparatus that applies the principle of equilibrium of moments and levers. The method of operation is parallel to that used for a beam balance, Figure 1. Key Features: There are five (5) key features required. 1. Beam is wide enough to support a mass. The width needs to be a minimum of 5/8 in (not including the pegs) 2. The length of the beam where the weight is applied needs to be a minimum of 9” long past the pivot point. 3.
