ENGR-STEPS 111: Project 1 - Loading Truss to Failure Objective: The objective is to determine the load required to cause the designed truss to fail. Purpose: The load for failure obtained will be compared to the value predicted. Equipment: Truss tester rig, Loading Weight(s), Ruler, Mass scale. Procedure: 1). Weigh the truss. Record this value as well as the values of the weights used. 2). Confirm that the loading arm is “level”. If not, adjust the counterweight so that the loading arm is “level”. Raise arm high enough to insert truss into test rig. 3). Insert truss onto platform of truss tester, figure 1. a. Place grommets on top of the joints that were used for the truss analysis, figure 2. b. Place the loading plate and load pin on top of the grommets so that the load pin will contact with the loading arm. Again, the loading should be the same as was used for the prediction. c. Adjust elevation of load arm by moving pivot block so that load arm just contacts the load pin.
