February 19, 2009 The French Revolution Caused by: Fiscal crisis: The government was out of money. The immediate result was a. . Political Crisis: Louis XVI saw no way out but to tax the nobles and the clergy. They demanded that if the king were going to try to tax them, he had to call a meeting of the Estates General (‘no taxation without representation’). This meeting was the first meeting in 175 years (1789). Economic crisis: The weather was very cold and stormy, which was very bad for crops. It was the 2 nd worst harvest ever recorded. The winter of 1788-1789 was extraordinarily cold. People were starving to death. Liberte Egalite Fraternite” Liberte: liberties or freedoms Egalite: equality in the eyes of the law Fraternite: popular sovereignty – people realized they were all in this together. Monarchy Nation. People went from being called subjects to being called citizens. Fall of 1788: The fiscal crisis was so severe that XIV said he had to tax the nobles and the clergy. They demanded a meeting of the Estates General. The EG was to meet in May of 1789.The three crisis exploded in the late spring of 1789. All over the country-side there are reports of starving peasants searching for food; seizing it when they found it, and if they did not, they moved on. ‘Great Fear.’ By the middle of July, the grains supplies to Paris were down to nothing. On July 12, 1789, there was no bread left in bakeries. People began searching for bread; crowds rushed from one part of town to another, following rumors of where bread was. 14 July 1789 the
