Philosophes- French word for philosopher- refers to someone who was a writer or thinker during enlightenment The PHILOSOPHES saw themselves as fighting a battle against UNREASON o Got start from scientific revolution o Discover laws of nature. When Galileo came up with law of inertia, he was first to describe it o Believed that if there were laws of nature, that there were natural laws that govern human behavior ; we just had to discover them Thought laws based on reason- NATURAL LAW – not based on reason such as saints
