WED Aug 26, 2009 Stages of change model: Pre-contemplation-thinking about changing Contemplation-hitting rock bottom; defining moment…when you make the descision to alter your life in some way Preparation-When you make a plan Action-going through the plan Maintenance-struggle against a relapse…maintaining the action Termination-Whipped the problem, beat the problem and do not have the temptation to go back to the old ways HOW TO TREAT MENTAL HEALTH Therapy Medication Personal culture-life changing events You do not have direct control over the environment or what other people do FRIDAY Aug 28, 2009 Mental Health Have to comfortable with yourself Meet demands of daily living o Hygiene o Punctuality Increased self-understanding o Part 1-practice or work on your skills for communication, emphasize communication…communicate effectively o Part 2-Maintaining positive self esteem o Part 3-Being able to meet the 4 basic human needs To live-meeting daily obligations To love-Not just romance To feel important Variety-different than the norm o Part 4-Possessing integrity-Do what you say Most common mental health problem is depression o Depression-existing through an extended period of sadness, being pesemistic, feeling hopeless, sleeping and eating disorders, physical problems that don’t improve Foundation for Mental Health Self Esteem-Foundation of mental health, good self esteem mean you will be ok mentally o Person with good self esteem Has friends Take risks Same mood:know what you will get Communicate effectively

o Person with bad self esteem Put themselves down, negative self talk Feel like the world is picking on them Isolated, quiet Shy Find trouble Self defeating behavior 4 Parts of self esteem o Sense of connection-how you are in groups o Sense of Uniqueness-being different o Sense of Power-how much control do you have over our life o Sense of Models-how you are raised Homework. .take each part of self esteem and type one paragraph for each about me. .self esteem evaluation WED Sept 9, 2009 If an individual uses their resilience all the time, then they will inhibit stress and are in a very stressful environment, then will need a sense of coherence; everyone has it and it is how much sense you can make out of the problems you come upon People with a high sense of coherence understand the challenges and stress they have, understanding there are resources out there to help them, and are motivated to do something about it Have the basics, can use help, can use communication and understand that they are not different from society 10 element map P. 21-22 Shows there are different aspects to your personality that must be increased to achieve mental health
