Eric Russo Lisa Rios 11:15 4/22/10 Readings:   Kozol, “ Shame of the Nation Fine, "Civics Lesson," Oakes and Lipton, "California's Defense," 1-Kozol’s reading focuses on NYC, and discusses how kids at a young age are happy and motivated to be educated at these schools in the slums. As they get older though, they realize that people of wealthier communities are getting much more. Kozol also discusses how segregation has become a type of school reform, and that people base decisions off the saying “separate but equal,” equal meaning what one “deserves.” Although the results of Brown vs. Board of Education were promising, we are right back where we left off. And now, the schools named after important advocates have become the most segregated schools in the country. In Fine’s reading she focuses on California, and discusses how a student’s journey from elementary school, to middle school, to high school is degrading. By high school students have a very clear understand of their situation, which puts the majority in a path to failure. It is stated by students that they would do anything for good education
