Section Timing Musical Content Musical Information Introduction 12 measures Rhythm Section 0:00-0:17 The rhythm section is playing (bass, piano, and drums). Boogie woogie shuffle beat, drummer lightly uses brushes on snare, four beats to the measure, the piano and bass are playing an arpeggio pattern. First chorus 12 measures Horns and Rhythm Section 0:17-0:34 The horns (Two tenor saxophones, one trumpet) are playing a riff over the rhythm section. Boogie woogie shuffle continues, two tenor saxophones and a trumpet are playing a syncopated and harmonized riff which is repeated three times, the trumpet is using a cup mute. Second chorus 12 measures Horns and Rhythm Section 0:34-0:51 Horns play a different riff over the rhythm section, ends with a two measure lick. Boogie woogie shuffle continues, horns play a different harmonized and syncopated riff which is repeated six times and has a more upbeat feel than the last 12 measures. Third Chorus 12 measures Vocals and Rhythm section 0:51-1:08 Jordan sings vocals over rhythm section. Boogie woogie shuffle continues, Jordan’s voice starts off conversational and humorous using his vocal range and ends with a smooth, jazzy vocal sound. Fourth Chorus 12 measures Vocals and Rhythm section 1:08-1:25 Stop time vocal break 1:08-1:13 First four measures is a stop time vocal break. The rhythm section hits in-between Jordan’s “Caldonia” shouts, then drummer hits every time Jordan speaks during “What Boogie woogie shuffle stops for first four measures but proceeds after, Jordan uses his full vocal range as he shouts “Caldonia! Boogie woogie shuffle continues, Jordan’s saxophone solo is very relaxed and pleasant to the ears, trumpet riff sounds similar to the riff in the second chorus, the saxophone ends the chorus with a high pitch yelling sound which lasts one measure and matches the sound of the sixth chorus. Sixth Chorus 12 measures Horns and Rhythm Section 1:42-1:59 Trumpet and saxophone are playing over the rhythm section. Boogie woogie shuffle continues, trumpet plays a riff and uses a growling effect which is repeated six times in call and response with the saxophones, which are playing an upbeat riff which is repeated for the first 10 measures, then ends the chorus with a one measure lick as the trumpet is playing its last growling sound.
