Eric Russo 5/4/10 Sustainable Cities Nigeria Nigeria, which is a country on the continent of Africa, depends on the export of oil to keep their economy stable. The population of the country is 148 million people and has the largest population in Africa. The Niger Delta, which is under-developed and the primary location of the oil industry in Nigeria, accounts for 95 percent of export earnings and 85 percent of government revenues, and is the world’s 7 th largest oil exporter. Shell is the biggest oil company in Nigeria and is responsible for half of the production of over 2 million barrels of crude oil a day. Other companies are Mobil, Chevron, Agip, Texaco, and Ashland. The main purchasers of Nigeria’s exports are the United States, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. It provides the U.S. with almost half of its oil imports. Although Nigeria could be a well off country, the wealth is not being evenly dispersed, the environment is being degraded, and the people are living a very unhealthy and unhappy life.
