Thesis Proposal 4 Introduction The World Health Organization (WHO) regards sexuality as an essential and integrated part of being human. “It is expressed through attitudes, behaviors and is influenced by culture, biology and history. Sexual health is not only defined as absence of illness, social, emotional, mental and physical wellness in relation to sexuality must also be taken into consideration” (WHO, 2002). While in nursing professions’ point of view, sexuality is considered to be an important aspect of holistic care. Studies show that diseases and treatments can affect sexuality, Furthermore different studies demonstrated that this issue is not routinely addressed in healthcare services and that a positive and respectful attitude towards sexuality is important to achieving sexual health. The American Nurses Association has acknowledged sexuality as an integral part of the patient care since 1974, although the assessment of sexuality of the patients is part of the holistic care and most nurses would agree (Haboubi & Lincoln, 2003). Nurses are also responsible for nursing practice and counselling regarding care and treatments including the question addressing sexuality (International Council of Nurses, Code of Ethics, 2005).
