Lavallee 1 Jenna Lavallee PH 129 TA= Jess Vickery 16 September 2010 Module I Class Response Paper 3. There are a number of determinants of health for Americans, either at the individual level or the social level. The main determinants of health have been classified into four categories: environment, behavior and lifestyle, hereditary, and medical care. All four categories predict Americans’ health patterns in life and therefore influence their health outcomes in the long run. Both individual and social determinants affect our health status, yet one does more so. The societal determinants affect people on a larger scale, and take time to change. The environmental determinants are ones that no one person can control, like air pollution, radiation, toxic chemicals, and water contaminants. It takes a great effort by everyone to affect such environmental risks. These all significantly influence a person’s health. Another aspect of environmental determinants is socioeconomic status.
