Part 5.1: Double Slit Diffraction Introduction: In this first part of the lab after all the calibrations, we studied known double-slit diffraction and interference patterns. With the .1 mm slit in front of the fiber, we have sufficient spatial resolution to measure the fine lines of a diffraction pattern of double slits. We then develop a voltage vs. time graph using the 4BL Menu. We then use this graph to calculate slot spacing d from the relationships: dsin θ = n λ and d = nD λ / y where d is the slit spacing, λ is wavelength, n is an integer, and y is the potentiometer reading. Then for the second part of this section of the lab, we measure slit spacing and width of an unknown slide with double slits using the same process. Experimental Results: Double Slit with Known Parameters First Order Maxima Position 1 .389 cm First Order Maxima Position 2 .433 cm Experimental Slit Spacing (d) .122 mm Experimental Slit Width (b) .038 mm Actual Slit Spacing (d) .125 mm Actual Slit Width (b) .04 mm 670 nm y .022 cm D 40 cm 31 o Double Slit with Unknown Parameters First Order Maxima Position 1 .248 cm First Order Maxima Position 2 .256 cm Experimental Slit Spacing (d) .060 mm Experimental Slit Width (b) .083 mm 670 nm y .044 cm D 40 cm Analysis: For the known double slit slide, we got an experimental value of .122 mm as opposed to the actual value of .125 mm for the value of d. For the slit width b, we got a value of .038 mm as opposed to the actual .04 mm. These values had percent differences of 2.4% and 5% respectively.
