Yogini Patel DUE: 2/23/11 Response Paper #3 Juliet vs. Desdemona Violet deLesseps in the moving motion picture, “ Shakespeare in Love” (1998) said “Love above all. No… not the artful postures of love, not playful and poetical games of love for the amusement of an evening, but love that. .. over-throws life. Unbiddable, ungovernable - like a riot in the heart, and nothing to be done, come ruin or rapture. Love - like there has never been in a play.” Whenever I hear this line, I am always caught thinking about Shakespeare’s two dynamic female characters, Juliet and Desdemona from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Othello’ respectively. Both female heroines fell head over heels for love that came with strings attached. However alike they may be in the sense of a tragic love story they are different. Juliet from Romeo and Juliet is on the threshold of her fourteenth birthday when she finds her love. In the beginning of the play Juliet seems to be on the border between immaturity and maturity. She is obedient to her parent’s wishes, sheltered due to the fact
