Sarah Croog Student ID: 24939025 Outline 11/6/11 Econ 366: History of Economic Development J Mohan Rao GNH (Gross National Happiness) and Religion in Bhutan: How does Spiritual Growth relate to Economic Growth? For my thesis, I wish to explore the effects and implications of GNH (Gross National Happiness) on development in Bhutan. Formally created in 1982, at a time in which numerous developing countries were rapidly enveloped and modernized by developed societies, the national objective sought to strike a balance between material and spiritual wealth, in efforts to retain Bhutan’s unique and joyous culture. Gross National Happiness explores the synergy of individual happiness with that of the community, as well as individual rights with responsibilities. In addition, Bhutan’s GNH preaches several Buddhist principles as a gateway to happiness, including enlightenment and moderation.
