Morphology and Structure Reproduction Metabolism symbiotic and pathogenic bacteria etc. Slide 2: What are prokaryotes: Can live in extreme environments: pH extremes, temperature extremes, salinity extremes Represent 2 of the 3 domains Slide 3: No membrane-enclosed nucleus No organelles No mitosis or meiosis Mostly asexual reproduction Slide 4: Enormous genetic diversity in bacteria and archaea Slide 5: Bacteria. Relative Size. 0.5 – 5 μm (microns) (1 micron = 1/1000 mm) Slide 6: Bacteria are everywhere. 10x biomass of eukaryotic organisms. Slide 7: 3 basic morphologies: spherical cocci (singular coccus), rod like bacilli (singular bacillus), spiral spirilla (singular spirillus). Fig. 27.2. 1

Antibiotics work to disrupt peptidoglycan formation Gram-negative bacteria usually more pathogenic and more resistant to antibiotics (protective layer of lipopolysaccharides). Lipid components often toxic. Fig. 27.3 Slide 9: Additional polysaccharide capsule around some bacteria: e.g. Streptococcus. Allows bacteria to stick together in colonies or stick to a host cell. Streptococcus causes “strep” throat. Fig. 27.4 Slide 10: Parasitic bacteria: often have fimbriae – permit attachment to host cells. e.g. Neisseria gonorrhoeae . Fig. 27.5
