Living creatures metabolism & heredity Why is a rabbit living? 1. Metabolism creates order & complexity from chaos by acquiring & expending energy a. 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in a CLOSED system, everything will tend toward disorder 2. Heredity create copies of themselves. 3 components: a. Multiplication rabbits create more rabbits b. Inheritance baby rabbits acquire parental characteristics c. Variation not all offspring are identical DNA codes, via RNA, for all 20 naturally occurring amino acids: o AMINO ACIDS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF PROTEINS (& BODIES) o DNA stores and transmits hereditary information but proteins do most of the work. DNA IS THE UNIVERSAL DIGITAL CODE OF LIFE But was DNA the genetic code at the start? DNA alone
