10/16/2011 1 8.1 The light and carbon reactions of photosynthesis in chloroplasts of vascular plants - Photosynthesis is a combination of light dependent & light independent (dark) reactions - Light and dark reactions are spatially separated Light-independent reactions (dark reactions) of photosynthesis -> Carbon dioxide is reduced to sugar using ATP and NADPH. (reducing = adding electrons and/or hydrogen) -> The process is called the Calvin Cycle . Proposed by Melvin Calvin (also known as Calvin-Benson cycle ) -> Happens in the stroma of chloroplasts. Photosynthesis is a cyclic process CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 (sugars) CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 (sugars) Substrate
