Matt Deis Theatre 242-010 Question C mattdeis@udel.edu Close Encounters of the Fourth Wall Very rarely does one walk out of a movie theatre and describe the film they just sat through as an “experience.” Yes, a film can bring one along on a roller coaster ride of emotional fluctuation and situational intensity, much the way a theatrical production can, yet there is something missing in the connection a film has between the audience and the actors that is quite apparent in live theatre. The lack of “experience” within the viewing of a film stems from the distance that is created between the audience and the actors due to the projection of images on a screen rather than the actual live viewing of a production; a distance that is nowhere to be found within the confines of a live theatre. Film allows the camera to be substituted for the human eye as the main receiver of live emotion and interaction which takes away the extremely important element of live performance that allows the theatre to create such an “experience.” Besides the availability of special effects, scenery and the always available opportunity for a “re-do,” the lack of personal and real connection between the audience and the actors proves itself to be the most dramatic of differences between the stage and the screen. A live performance would be nothing without a live audience to participate in the transference of emotion and situational awareness that is constantly being created and reacted to by the actors and actresses on stage.
