Obum Ezekwem Prof. Sizcek 4/18/2011 Poetry Response: Mrs. Wei on Governments Hilary Tham’s poem, Mrs. Wei on Governments , discusses the theme of the open-minded government of the United States vs. a narrow-minded government of Malaysia and the affect these governments have on the behavior of the people who live in these respective countries; she describes these governments using her alter-ego Mrs. Wei. She describes the Malaysian Government to be “like the American price system: take it or leave it” system. I interpreted this as Hilary Tham saying that the Malaysian government expects every citizen to abide by laws they have created and not to question them or voice their opinion on them. If the citizens do not like the decrees placed on them, they can leave the country. She declares that it is not easy for citizens to abandon their country in the 1 st and 2 nd stanzas of her poem: “it’s easy enough to leave a dress hanging on the rack, but a country is not something you can get up and walk away from”.
