11/09/11 2 Sexually Transmitted  Diseases (STDs or STIs) STDs are at epidemic proportions in U.S Annually 18 mill. Americans get an STD 1 in 4 sexually active teens will contact 1 sometimes death Sexual behavior does not cause STDs; it’s  merely the mode of transmission Caused by the spread of bacteria, viruses or  parasites Did not come from human sex w/animals

11/09/11 3 STDs Gonorrhea – 1 of the oldest STDs On the rise in college pop. Caused by bacterium; lives on moist mucous  Woman’s risk w/infected man more than man’s risk  w/infected woman Sx. In men:  inflammation of urethra causing thick,  puss-like white or yellowish d/c b/g 2 to 10 days post  infection; irritation/burning when urinating. Men usually get tx.immediately by 5-20% show no sx

11/09/11 4 Gonorrhea  If not tx. Spreads to man’s reproductive system In women invades cervix;  most women are  asymptomatic!!!! during urination If left untreated spreads through uterus into  Doesn’t get transmistted to baby during  pregnancy or birth but can infect the eyes from  birth canal;Is treated w/drops.  Can infect adults’  eyes too.

11/09/11 5 Tested via cotton swab culture or urine  test Tx. With antibiotics Now, some antibiotic resistant strains Tx. For Chlamydia is the same as with  Gonorrhea

6 Urethritis Any inflammation of urethra not caused by  gonococcus bac. = nongon urt (NGU) trichomonas vaginalis but most freq. Caused  by Chlamydia More common than Gon. w/over 4 mill. New  cases ea. Yr. Common among teens and college students,  but also adults Sx.:  early sx. Milder than Gon. But similar.   Often mistaken for Gon. Irritation, burning, discharge
