Importance of Retailing to the World Economy The top 10 countries in the 2010 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) are the most diverse mix of large and small markets in its nine- year history: China, Kuwait, India, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, Peru and Russia. China is tops the GRDI for the first time since 2002. Chinese consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable with Western-style retail formats. The country’s size (population) continues to provide retailers with opportunities.
