Circumcision was the defining mark of he religious community. Hebrews migrate to Egypt due to a famine in their region. In there, they became slaves and God rescued them by making a Covenant with Moses. God establishes the nation of Israel (named after Abraham’s grandson Jacob) at mount Sinai.
