PAIN AND THE ELDERLY: METHODOLOGYPain and the Elderly: MethodologyThis chapter describes the research methods that were used to carry out a literaturereview on the assessment and management of pain in older adults. In detail, the research design, data collection methods, and data analyses are described in this section. This is a qualitativeresearch methodology that uses a review of the literature.Purpose of the StudyStudies suggest that the elderly with a diagnosis of mental health illnesses such asdementia, as well as chronic and acute long-term conditions, often experience pain that goesunidentified, poorly managed, or poorly identified. Management of pain in geriatrics continues tochallenge nursing and medical healthcare providers(Horgas, 2017). This study aims toinvestigate and identify the significant challenges of pain identification, assessment, andmanagement in geriatric care. The purpose of the study is to:1.Describe the quality of pain management geriatrics receive in the hospital, underpalliative care when they report pain.2.Evaluate the assessment methods used to identify the existence and severity of pain inolder adults.3.Evaluate the relationship between pain assessment methods, management andintervention, and the clinical outcome of older adults. The hypotheses of the study are:1.Older adults experience pain, but it is under-reported due to inadequate screening.2.Nurses have barriers in pain management assessment in older adults leading to under-diagnosis. Older patients experience barriers in pain assessment and management inpalliative care.
