Christopher Webb Group 2 Prof. Stansfield April 11, 2011 Summary Week 1 In the first week in our class, we talked about protest movements and strategies. My group and I specifically learned a lot from Middle Class Movements in India, America, Brazil and South Africa for the first presentation assignment for the spring semester. My specific area was dealing with the American middle class movements, in which I presented the Abolitionist movement. At this time I heard about the abolitionist movement but I really didn’t have a clear perspective of it as being a middle class movement. The Quakers who were mostly from Dutch and German countries really had me at “aww” because it sent me back that it was actually whites who were the first to fight for African Slaves human rights. It also intrigued me that America seem to take so much from British methods and standards of living, as it was the Somersett Cases in Great Britain that started somewhat of a movement of seeing African slaves left alone.
