Belize Notes Quick Facts 1. It is a Caribbean country 2. Queen Elizabeth is considered the head of state 3. Population ¼ million but another quarter live in the US 4. Has 90% literacy 5. Exports Sugar, Citrus, Rice, garments, corn, Coca, and tourism is its #1 foreign exchange earner. How it got its start Belize got its start under British occupation going back to the middle of the 17 th century around 1650’s. By the 1800’s it was known as British Honduras which specialized in timber exports particularly in mahogany. The Mayan Indians who lived in the area all went over towards what is today the Guatemalan border area. As a result slaves were imported by the British to support rice and sugar cane plantings in the area. So it became like a slaveocracy. By 1838 however the slaves were free The British made a treaty with Guatemala in 1859 which determined the boundaries of the colonies as the British called it.
