Basal Body Each cilium or flagellum has a basal body located at its base. Basal bodies anchor the cilia or flagella and are thought to be responsible for their formation. Basal bodies contain triplets of microtubules along the periphery but do not have central microtubules (9 + 0). They look like centrioles (discussed below) and are believed to be derived from them.
