Microtheme-I The Chinese religious backdrop is often described in terms of three religions- Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. Yet, the Chinese culture has very little conception that belief and practice must focus on a single tradition. The god’s that people worship may have Buddhist, Daoist or Confucian affiliations, or none of these. In fact, Chinese popular religion has no proper name it is not an ‘ism’. This popular religion could be considered as a common core set of beliefs and practices which generously scrounges from all of the three teachings. It is more an academic classification and scholarship in it is rapidly growing. Popular religion has two very distinct styles by which scholars perceive it today. Focusing on the aspects of religious practices of most people is one and centering on the religion of the lower classes is the other. Scrutinizing the latter explains that even though the rituals and
