Introduction: Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is trapped by plants and is converted into the chemical bonds of glucose. Plants absorb light energy through photosynthetic pigments, which are located in the thylakoid membranes in the chloroplasts of plant cells. The environment in which a plant is grown in can affect the amount and type of pigments it has. Additionally, evolution plays a large role in this. For example, the amount of sunlight a plant is exposed to over many generations will determine which types of pigments are present. Plants use different pigments to in order to absorb specific wavelengths of light to convert to energy. Different photosynthetic pigments have evolved because different pigments allow different wavelengths of light to also be used to gain energy, thus maximizing the efficiency of photosynthesis. Some species may lack the pigments of others due to evolutionary adaptation to their environments. There are three types of photosynthetic pigments: chlorophyll, carotenoid, and phycobilin.
