Michael Short 01-31-10 Geography 5 Week 4 Readings The articles for week four focus primarily on the topic of overpopulation. However, the article that seemed to have the most importance this week was “Lifeboat Ethics” by Garrett Hardin. “Lifeboat Ethics” takes the idea of overpopulation translates it into a metaphor. The metaphor represents every country as a lifeboat. Hardin, using the metaphor, singles in on the lifeboat of the United States relating to its various issues concerning overpopulation and its relationship with poverty, immigration, and world hunger. In this piece Hardin takes a very critical and direct stance on how to approach the various problems of the world concerning overpopulation. Personally, after reflecting on this essay I felt Hardin’s every man for himself morals are not necessarily the only solution to the problem of overpopulation. In his essay, I feel strongly Hardin’s views toward a world food bank are much too critical of human and governmental nature.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
