Michael Short 01-25-10 Geography 5 Week 4 The three articles for week four all focus on the theory of overpopulation. In these articles, discussed is how this population occurs, what the result of this overpopulation could mean and even possible pre-emptive strategies to avoid such a drastic overpopulation that we are currently on course for. Barry Commoner’s article “Poverty Breeds Overpopulation” goes against the more common views of why the world is being overpopulated. According to Commoner the main view for the reason of overpopulation is uncontrolled fertility. Instead Commoner claims that overpopulation is created due to the welfare of society. He uses an example to fortify this argument involving Swedish birth and death rates at a particular point in the 1800s. In the beginning birth and death rates were fairly equal. Then agriculture and production increased and death rates decreased, but birth rates remained the same. Over time however birth rates lowered and balanced with the death rate. The
