Michael Short 10-02-09 History 1C Week 1 In Voltaire’s Letter on the English he discusses a many different topics, in general though he discusses religion, politics, trade, and art. In religion he goes into detail on specific religions including Presbyterian and Catholicism. When discussing Catholicism Voltaire claims that it favors the way of the Quakers except for the fact that in Catholicism there is baptism, communion and priests. Voltaire favors the way the Quakers live their lives simply and in solitude. When speaking of the Presbyterians, Voltaire speaks of them as intolerant. He claims that their religion is overly strict, where they practically forbid expression. In Voltaire’s writings he talks about politics, but more specifically English politics. He compares the English government and parliament to that of the Roman and French governments. When comparing the Roman and English governments he favors the Roman government for not going to war over religion, favors the English government for not being a tyrannical government. Voltaire says nothing bad
