ISB202 (005) HW#3 NAME: Jingyi Tan GROUP: G4 1. What is a pteropod? Is it a plant, animal, or bacteria? Where does it live? What is unique about a pterpod’s sex? Pteropod is a kind of tiny marine organisms which belongs to zooplankton. Pteropods swim a pair of wing like gelatinous flaps and deem even smaller marine creatures as their food resource. The unique about pteropods’ sex is that they are first males, then become females as they growth. 2. What question did Victoria Fabry investigate for her research? Pteropd’s shell growth 3. What was the key finding resulting from Fabry’s research? What was happening to the pteropods and WHY? This research showed the key result that shell-buliding species were vulnerable and highly sensitive to water chemistry changes. In this case, the edge of the pteropod’s shell became opaque instead of transparent which it used to be, after putting a dozen of them into one bottle filled with seawater which was added a small amount of radioactive calcium 45.
