Michael Short 803781208 Political Science 40 Practice Paper In this paper I will argue that moral issues are polarizing the electorate on a large- scale. Due to this, President Barack Obama, should run for the 2012 presidency using moral issues as a central component of his campaign. I base my argument on 3 particular issues that are sure to have pertinence in the 2012 presidential election. First, is the issue of gun control, which over the past 9 years has maintained a popular public opinion calling for the regulated right to bear arms. Second, comes the moral argument of the various same-sex issues. Obama has taken a firm stance on this and it is a debate that has become more and more prevalent in the United States political spectrum as sentiment for same-sex rights grow. Finally, Barack Obama's campaign must focus on issues regarding the environment issues regarding the environment, as environmental protection has been a constant topic of discussion for the American people for over 20 years. Barack Obama’s statement on the right to bear arms explains his stance, “As a general principle I believe that the constitution confers an individual right to bear arms, but just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can’t constrain the exercise of that right” (Obama, Philadelphia). Obama is in favor of regulating guns, but not the complete banishment of them. A CBS poll taken January 15th - 19th of 2011 coincides with the view of a majority of the population. The
