Michael Short 12-03-09 Western Civilizations Week 10 “The Sinews of Peace” by Winston Churchill is a piece with the intention of bringing together all the countries of the United Nations in order to stand as a single unit against the Communist Soviet Union. In the article he refers to the “iron curtain”, which is the area enclosed by the influence of communism. It is clear in the writing that Winston Churchill is worried about the Soviet Union and its intentions for the world in the future. He says, “We cannot afford, if we can help it, to work on narrow margins, offering temptations to a trial of strength.” As to how far his statements relate to the U.S.’s involvement in the nuclear race and involvement in it is the big question. Unformatted text preview: I got from the article was that Winston Churchill was not focusing primarily on the nuclear race in this article. He seems to be more focused on the cooperation of the United Nations in using its influence as a group super power in order to maintain and suppress the Soviet Union from exerting its influence beyond the “Iron Curtain”. This is evident through his call to action not in the form of nuclear build up, or even nuclear deactivation, but through his call for unity. To me this was the most crucial point in the article and the entire introduction of the article put the Soviet Union in a friendly perspective before he begins talking about to control them....
