Chapter 1 Drug : A chemical agent that modifies the way that the body/brain functions. Psychoactive Drug : Neurotransmitters in the brain…herbal or synthetic molecules. It has both positive and negative effects. Ex. Caffeine – helps you stay awake but then makes it hard for you to fall asleep. Tolerance, addiction, withdrawal Four Principles 1. Alter consciousness and affects mood 2. Multiple effects 3. Effects are subject to change 4. Individual effects (i.e. heroin, caffeine) Classification of psychoactive drugs - Stimulants - Depressants - Narcotics - Hallucinogens - Anabolic steroids - Illicit and licit Important questions to consider when looking at people taking drugs: Who is taking the drug? (past addictions) What drug is being used? (medication vs. heroin) When is the drug being used? Why is the drug being used? How is the drug being taken? (oral, smoking, injecting). Polydrug Use: consuming more than one type of psychoactive chemical
