After reading the article, “Transgenic Crops: An Introduction Resource Guide,” our group has come to understand what transgenic plants actually are. A transgenic organism is one which has had DNA artificially introduced into one or more of its cells. Although many benefits have come from using this method, we believe that not enough research has been done to answer the uncertainty about food safety and the impacts this method will have on our health. The benefits of manipulating the world’s agriculture are numerous. The internet article “Genetically Modified Foods and organisms,” ( www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/gmfood.shtml ) gives a inventory of the many benefits that come from using this method, such as: “Enhanced taste and quality of crops, reduced maturation time, increased nutrients, yields, and stress tolerance, improved resistance to disease, pests, and herbicides, as well as, many new and improved growing techniques.” What this means for society is that there will be food security for everyone.
