 Christopher Columbus : Hero or Villain?              - Sponsored by Spain– King Ferdinand of Castile and Queen Isabella of Aragon. -Four Voyages (1492-1504) -1st voyage – landed in Hispaniola (Haiti) Columbus never realized he had not found China, India, Japan, or islands off the coast of Asia. Nor did  he ever realize he had landed at the “New World”  -Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) was the first to realize Columbus had landed on an actual continent (sponsored by Portugal) “Indian” - concept that has been invented and perpetuated  by Europeans, starting with Columbus categorizing the  variety of cultures and societies as a single entity,  downplaying diversity in   creating a simplified understanding. Oversimplified misrepresentation easily lapses into  stereotype. The Origins of “Indian”  (los Indios) Spanish legacy - Columbus’ error of geography. He didn’t  see any diversity in the people’s  he encountered, just that  they were “brown  skinned” and inferior. Basis for the idea
