Recitation ten Question 1 Consider the following reaction: V 2 O 5 + KI KV 2 O 5 + I 2 This is a rare example of a reaction that only involves solids and can be performed by simply grinding the two reactants on the left together in a mortar. It is spontaneous under these conditions as seen from the color change. V 2 O 5 is yellow and KI colorless. Solid iodine is purplish brown and the mixture turns brown. 1. Is this equation balanced? 2. Given that the reaction is spontaneous, what do you expect G, H and S to be: (large and) positive, (large and) negative or around zero? 3. Would you expect the reaction to be exothermic or endothermic? 4. The reaction will eventually go to completion under these conditions without going to equilibrium. Why? 5. Under conditions of sufficiently high pressures and high temperatures the reaction does achieve an equilibrium at T=653K. Does this information allow you to say something more precise about G, H and S? 6.
