Suicide in the prison jail or any custodial settings has been the leading cause of death
worldwide (Konrad et al., 2007; Rabe, 2012, as cited in Favril et al., 2019). The suicide rate in
prison is three times higher than in the general population. As recorded in European countries,
suicide occurs in about 100 per 100,000 inmates (Fazel, Ramesh, & Hawton, 2017, as cited in
Favril et al., 2019). Study shows that suicide ideation is prevalent in female than in male, but an
actual suicide attempt is high in male than in females (
Opitz-Welk et al., 2016).
I have chosen
this topic because I currently work in a correctional facility as a registered psychiatric nurse. It is
mind-boggling to see the rate at which lives are wasted by suicide in this jail. Prisoners are likely
to be suicidal due to their legal situation or mental illness. According to research by Smith et al.
