Recitation session eight Question 1 Consider the molecules CH 4 , CH 3 Cl, CH 2 Cl 2 , CHCl 3 and CCl 4 What are the names of these five compounds? What kind of shape would you expect for these molecules? The first and last boiling points are CH 4 112K and CCl 4 350K Calculate the total number of electrons in each molecule (core ones included). Sketch a graph with the total number of electrons on the x-axis and the boiling points on the y- axis. Assume it is a straight line. Estimate what boiling point you would expect for the middle three compounds. (If you have a laptop with excel or a graphing calculator, please use it). Which of these five compounds possess a dipole moment? Can you say anything about which dipole will be largest? The actual boiling points are 112 K, 249K, 313 K, 334K and 350 K. Add these points to your sketch. Can you explain why this is not a straight line when plotted against the number of electrons?
