1 Adipose Tissue- 2010 Adipose is fat tissue. It is the largest storehouse of energy in the body. The energy is stored in the form of triglycerides (esters of fatty acids and glycerol). Deposition of fat in the body is under hormonal control. Fat makes up 15-20% of normal body weight in men and 20-25% in women. All fat tissue is highly vascularized although, in routine histological preparations, the vessels may not be apparent. Fat cells (adipocytes) are easy to indentify. Each cell has one nucleus that has been pushed all the way to one side by the lipid droplet. This gives the so called signet ring appearance. During preparation of slides, alcohol and xylene dissolves the fat droplet, leaving a thin amount of cytoplasm surrounding the vacuole where the lipid droplet was once stored. Fat is nearly ubiquitous in the body and thus can be seen in almost any organ you look at. Most loose CT contains individual adipocytes or small scattered clusters. Adipose tissue usually refers to grossly visible masses of adipocytes. Biochemistry of fats: adipose is more efficient for energy storage than glycogen which is stored in liver and skeletal muscle. With triglycerides you get 9.3 kcal/g. With glycogen you only get 4.1 kcal/g. Triglycerides come from three sources: diet, liver, or by the synthesis of free fatty acids and glycerol in adipose cells. Dietary fats are mostly triglycerides which cannot be absorbed. Small droplets of triglycerides (fat) tend to clump together to form a big globules of fat which is totally indigestible. To overcome this, bile salts fuse with the fat droplets and thus emulsify the fat – i.e. disperses the fat droplets into tiny droplets allowing them to be suspended in the watery contents of the digestive chyme. (The fat droplets coated with bile acids are referred to as micelles ). In so doing, the droplets are exposed to pancreatic lipases which break down triglycerides into free fatty acids (FFA’s) and monoglycerides. This digestion of triglycerides takes place in the small
